Faith
& Religion

Faith-based and religious viewpoints add to the pluralistic power of higher education – in teaching, truth-seeking, and helping societies navigate the deepest of disagreements – and also raise thorny questions for colleges and universities.
HxA members explore the role of faith and religion in higher education, including tensions between religious freedom and open inquiry, the role of religious worldviews in viewpoint diversity, and the power of interfaith dialogue.
We also explore the role of official religion in higher education contexts. Can a religious college restrict open inquiry and religious diversity? Should secular colleges be equally (in)sensitive to different faiths? Do recent cultural trends actually have similarities to religion, or is that comparison misleading?
