Protecting Free Speech on Campus: A Look at CSU’s New Systemwide Time, Place, and Manner Policy

The Heterodox Academy (HxA) Campus Network Community at Cal State LA, Sacramento State, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and CSU Faculty for Academic Freedom invite you to an exciting event delving into the evolving dynamics of free speech within the CSU system.

This event will feature Prof. Matthew McCormick of CSU-Sacramento and Laura Beltz, Director of Policy Reform at FIRE. Matthew will provide an in-depth analysis of the political context surrounding CSU’s interim Time, Place, and Manner (TPM) policy. His talk will touch on relevant events, including recent campus encampments, legislative developments such as a proposed Senate bill, and other background issues that influenced the policy’s creation. Laura will follow with a comparative discussion of CSU’s new TPM policy, evaluating how it measures up to other policies across the nation. She will also explore FIRE’s best practices for protecting free speech on college campuses, providing actionable insights for CSU stakeholders.

Brief Q&A will follow the presentations. Join the Zoom Meeting on Friday, November 1 at 1:00 PM PST to participate in the discussion!
